01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A thick slice of toast and a freshly brewed cup of house-blend coffee arriving at your table make an ideal pairing before a stroll around town or for starting the day in peace. Located in Kita-Ueno, Cafe Katsura preserves the calm ambiance of a traditional kissaten, serving everything from morning specials to light meals and house-baked pastries. The morning plate features thick-cut toast alongside scrambled eggs and salad, coming together with coffee for a simple, satisfying breakfast.
For lunch, the cafe prepares a nostalgic ketchup-based Neapolitan pasta. Pasta sets can be paired with salad and dessert, and include house-blend coffee for a leisurely finish to the meal. The light dining selection also offers plenty of variety, including pilaf sets where you can choose between shrimp, yakiniku grilled beef, takana pickled mustard greens, or dry curry, as well as the Katsura Sandwich made with English-style bread, ham, and lettuce.
Those stopping by for something sweet will not want to miss the desserts baked on site. The crème brûlée is made with 2 kinds of fresh cream and egg yolks slowly baked, then caramelized after ordering to bring out a crisp, fragrant shell. Alongside an orange-scented baked cheesecake, a gently tart rare cheesecake, and a rich gâteau au chocolat, the counter also features baked treats such as florentines and chocolate galettes.
Inside, table seats and counter spots provide a quiet environment that is easy to visit solo. Note that payment is cash only, so it is wise to prepare ahead. Paired with a warm blend or iced coffee, it makes an unpretentious stop for an easygoing cafe break.
